There was tragedy on Sunday afternoon at London Southend Airport after a small Beechcraft B200 Super King Air crashed moments after taking off – exploding into a huge fireball just seconds after getting off the ground. Official’s are treating the incident as a “major aviation emergency” and it is feared there will be victims.

Witnesses at the airport told of the chilling last seconds before the crash. John Johnson, who was accompanied by his wife and two children, remembered a chilling but heartening act:

“All of us were waving to pilots, and the pilots waved back. The aircraft’s taillights flashed through the sudden darkness as it accelerated down the runway and took off, but reportedly only seconds after it was airborne, banked hard to the left, flipped over, and crashed into the ground. The explosion was massive.

The collision happened at 3:58 PM BST[3] several emergency services attended immediately.

A plume of black smoke was visible from miles away rising from the runway area. ‘ The nearby Rochford Hundred Golf Club was evacuated after people said they felt a sudden gust of intense heat.

“I was baking,” said James Philpott, a bartender at the golf course. “Then I saw the fireball. People began running to the scene of the crash, not knowing what they might find.”

Flights Cancelled, Area Evacuated

At least four planned flights have been cancelled following the crash, according to the airport’s live update portal. Services were stopped immediately, with Southend-on-Sea residents advised to stay away.

The airport spokesperson said:

“This was asmall general aviation aircraft. We are liaising with Essex Police and the emergency services in response to this incident. We will have more information once it becomes available.

Ongoing Investigation & National Response

Essex Police said the crash was between a 12-meter-long light aircraft. Officials are yet to release information on the number of people on board, or whether there were any survivors. The Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, has said that she is being kept fully informed:

“All my thoughts to the victims.” Emergency services cannot do any more.”

Members of Parliament and local council leaders expressed their condolences and support on social media, and praised how quickly responders acted.
